But what is the original image? Is it possible they were all based on “La Liberté guidant le peuple,” the painting by Eugène Delacroix, commemorating the July Revolution of 1830?

Nope, we’re getting too intellectual here. It turns out that Tom Jung, who designed the Star Wars poster, has admitted that he was going for a Frank Frazetta look. Here is the classic Frazetta he had in mind. Note that the skull looming in the background inspired Darth Vader’s helmet in the Star Wars poster.
