Sixty Sonnets is currently being translated into Danish by two gentlemen, a translator at the United Nations and Seamus Heaney’s Danish translator. The first of these two intrepid adventurers sent me some pictures of his workplace, taken on his camera phone, including the classic “smoking discouraged” sign, which has inspired many American visitors to mutter “I don’t think we’re in New York anymore, Toto . . . .” I’m told the Russian delegation would declare war on someone, anyone, if deprived of their cigarettes.
