Everyone has heard about Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster, who continues to hide somewhere in a Scottish lake, but did you know that America has its own submerged monster in Lake Champlain?
There are plenty of Native American legends of lake creatures. Lake Champlain is geographically similar and creates the same effect in the waves that makes it look as if something big is moving just below the surface: is it an optical illusion or is there really an American cousin there? If so, his name is Champ.
If you go to Burlington, VT, you will wind up purchasing all manner of fun souvenirs featuring the mysterious underwater inhabitant. The local minor league baseball team is even named the Burlington Lake Monsters.
I took my kids there five years ago and we did indeed buy cool champ swag, including an umbrella, hats, and a Christmas tree ornament!
Bonus: There may be two Canadian cousins as well!
- Ogopogo in British Columbia’s Lake Okanagan
- Cressie in Newfoundland’s Crescent Lake
Who knows where else cryptozoologists will find a prehistoric swimmer?
