I have never been very good at recalling specific dates or appointments, and annual ones, anniversaries, tend to be particularly elusive where I’m concerned. As a result, I missed E-Verse Radio’s eighth birthday, which was July 1st.

For most of those eight years, E-Verse Radio existed strictly as an e-mail newsletter, without so much as a web presence (when I’m feeling full of it, I call it a “grassroots electronic broadside”). It went out five times a week to a slowly growing cohort of readers. I began with twelve subscribers, two of whom, ex-girlfriends, asked to be removed immediately. Over the following years, I pushed the merits of E-Verse Radio everywhere I wandered, in bars, at parties, at readings, in bookstores. I arrived home most nights with ten scribbled e-mail addresses in my pocket. They were virtually illegible most of the time, scrawled on cocktail napkins and scraps torn from paperback endpapers and magazine corners. I gradually built the number of readers up to 1,000, and I was helped in this by devoted readers who forwarded E-Verse Radio installments to friends and family members. Thanks to the new automatic subscription system we have installed on the long-overdue website, my subscriber base has risen recently to 1,500!

The actual radio and video show are very recent. I initially chose E-Verse Radio because “E-Verse” had been taken as a screen name on most e-mail services. I imagined it worked something like a text radio show each day. Now, thanks to the efforts of my producer Paul Fleming, I have managed a weekly (in the summer months, biweekly) web radio and tv show (you can visit them by clicking on “Radio” or “TV” on the bar above). Our viewer numbers continue to rise, and some shows are downloaded as many as 800 times on a single day (though others languish, so go back into the archives and have a look).
So, I wish E-Verse Radio a happy belated eighth birthday. May it enjoy many more. Thank you all for reading, listening, watching, and, of course, contributing and participating so energetically.

Happy birthday, E-Verse!
Who’s that dashing young lad with the cool tattoo in the first photo? Good looking. And who’s the fella with the big guns?
