The new issue of Fine Books & Collections magazine (18.3, Summer 2020) contains my profile of Kevin Young. We spoke earlier this year about his work as a poet, essayist, anthologist, book collector, professor, scholar, curator, and Director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in New York City. Along the way we talked about Langston Hughes, Les Cenelles (the first anthology of African-American poetry), Allen Ginsberg’s important emendations to his poem “America,” W. E. B. Dubois’ personal copy of David Walker’s Appeal, in Four Articles, Together with a Preamble to the Colored Citizen’s of the World, the Negro Motorist Green Book, and much more. Many thanks to Mr. Young and his staff at the Schomburg Center, and to editor Rebecca Rego Barry and publisher Webb C. Howell for agreeing so energetically to my proposal to write about Young. It was a pleasure all around. You can purchase the issue or subscribe here.
