For over a decade, the Foundation for Feline Urban Rescue (FFUR) has been working to reduce the number of stray cats and kittens in Philadelphia by trapping, rescuing and placing cats/kittens in good homes. We are devoted to giving these animals a second chance at a healthy, contented life with loving people.
FFUR has a no-kill policy, which means we do not euthanize cats/kittens unless the animal is too ill or injured to recover. Of the hundreds of rescues we have made in recent years, only a handful have needed to be euthanized. And every cat/kitten we have rescued has had a successful placement in a loving home.
FFUR is a team of just four volunteers. Together we test, treat, spay and neuter all the cats/kittens we rescue. All injuries are treated. Every cat is treated for fleas and other parasites. Each cat receives all their vaccines. Each cat is spayed or neutered. All these treatments are essential to maintaining the health of the cat. It is an expensive service that costs between $500 and $1,000 per cat. All the costs are paid for by the FFUR volunteers and through donations. All veterinary care is provided by the VCA Cat Hospital of Philadelphia.
In addition to FFUR’s trap and rescue program, we also feed feral cat colonies and have begun to spay/neuter and release within those colonies. We feed more than 100 cats daily.
FFUR is different from shelters because of our hands-on approach to animal care. We work hard with each of our rescue animals to acclimate them to people. Handling and teaching these cats how to behave with people makes them friendly and personable: the perfect house cat.
FFUR cats/kittens are all rescue animals who have either been born on the street or been abandoned to the street by their previous owners. This means these animals have had to fend for themselves on the street–scrounging for food and shelter. They may have been abused. These animals might require more patience and love than a cat that has always known a comfortable life. We carefully choose homes for these pets because of their special needs.
We hope you can contribute to our rescue service. Any contribution is helpful. The number of cats and kittens on the streets of Philadelphia is exponential. One pair of cats can create more than 200 cats in one year and the majority of these animals will die on the streets–victims of disease, abuse, car accidents and starvation.
We are trying to save feline lives, but we can’t do it alone: We need your help. Please see our adoption page for information about how to adopt a FFUR cat and our donation page for more information about how to donate and what your donation will help us achieve.
You can help us take more cats off the street and place them in homes where they will be a loved part of the family.
Thank you for your help in saving the lives of cats and kittens in Philadelphia!
