I’ve recently been dipping into The Great Shark Hunt, the first volume of Hunter S. Thompson’s voluminous “Gonzo Papers.” The first half of the book is devoted almost entirely to Thompson’s bête noire Richard Nixon. He simply seethes over the thought of Nixon in the White House, and Thompson’s apocalyptic hyperbole on the subject is quite amusing. I know that Nixon is now considered something of a hero to a whole new younger generation of political junkies, and we must remember that every man, loved or hated, was once a child. So I invite you to guess which of the lovable tykes in this photograph would grow up to be Tricky Dick.

Maybe the guy in the front row, far right? I love the tie and no shoes

Bottom right is right! You can tell from the hunch, the puffed cheeks, the perpetually scheming underdog expression . . . ah, what a miserable son of a bitch he must have been. When I was in college, we once drove and sat in front of his home in North Jersey to see if he would come out at any point. Given that he had his own private security firm working for him, we may well have put ourselves in some jeopardy. We also sat in the parking lot of the consulting firm he sometimes worked for. No sightings.
I also chose far right, first row. I envisioned this tike growing up and it was absolutely clear! (Although the kid second from left, first row has a scowl that Nixon used later. Maybe the two were friends?
