Kids are never too young to hear rich language. I recently came across a wonderful series of books called “Poetry for Young People.”
The series devotes one book to each poet. There is a mini biography of the poet, a small introductory paragraph about each poem, definitions of less common words and variations, as well as beautiful colored illustrations to interest the kids (are there pictures, mom?).
I found four of them at the local Goodwill: Poe, Sandburg, Wordsworth, and Kipling. My kids are now crazy about “The Raven” by Edgar Allen Poe. They love shouting “nevermore!” at the end of stanzas.
Here is a link to when even the Simpsons did their version of “The Raven.”
