Story: Music After is a marathon concert, co-produced by composers Eleonor Sandresky and Daniel Felsenfeld, to take place on September 11, 2011 at Joyce SoHo on Mercer Street, commencing at 9:18am and finishing after midnight. Composers and songwriters who lived or were housed downtown on that day a decade prior will be represented. It will be a concert that will demonstrate, with an appropriately-long arc, not only the sheer number of composers who were immediately effected but also the fact that, ten years on, they are still here, still doing what they do. Beyond that, it will be a free, casual, un-sanctimonious place where the music community en masse, and anyone else who wants to join us, can go—to meet, to think, to listen. The day will be about Music – speech-making and memorializing will happen elsewhere and by others.
On September 11, 2001, Daniel Felsenfeld was a few blocks from the World Trade Center, looking after the apartment of Eleonor Sandresky, who was on tour with the Philip Glass Ensemble in Brazil. Both of them—like all of the composers featured—were forever changed. It was for this reason that they both decided to produce this concert, a gift to (and from) the city
Impact: The concert is a gift, from us to the greater us, the community of musicians who felt the impact that day in the most direct sense. It is our hope that it will give everyone involved–the composers and songwriters whose work we will present; the astonishing musicians who will perform; and those who come to listen–a place to be on that complex day, an option to be part of a group but not part of a commemoration or an austere set of remembrances. Just a cross-section of creative musicians, doing what they do (still), a day that is not about the tragedy but about the music.
What We Need & What You Get: Our budget covers the costs of performers, technical and support staff, as well as rentals required for the concert, such as a sound system, piano, music stands, etc, and catering. This concert will be like having five three-hour concerts all in a row, and we have to staff it as such. Joyce SoHo has generously donated the space, Vision Into Art is also generously donating their services as fiscal conduit, and our publicist is working for a very modest fee. All the performers are playing for a modest honorarium of $200, far below their normal fees as you must know. This concert is an act of love from us to the greater us.
So many great composers and songwriters who make up the fabric of today’s music world have not only generously donated their time and music, but also recordings of their works, and these will be passed on to you to thank you for your generosity. What we have–and what we continue to have–is our music. That is what Music After is about.
Other Ways You Can Help: If you are unable to make a contribution, you can help us simply by sharing this campaign with as many people who will listen. Please pass this on to anyone you think might be interested, use the Social Media, send mass emails. This will not only help us get the concert off the ground, but also will help us pass the word about this important and, we truly believe, healing event.
